List of California’s Top Colleges and Universities Part II
Last week, we began giving you a list of some of the top colleges and universities in California. Since many of you high school seniors will soon be applying to a plethora of colleges and universities, we chose a variety of public and private colleges to look over.
So, here is Part II of the list:
1. Pitzer College
Located in Claremont, California, Pitzer College has an undergraduate enrollment of about 1,100. It is a liberal arts college which has an 11:1 student/faculty ratio. Its creative curriculum emphasizes educational objectives rather than core requirements and has a highly interdisciplinary curriculum.
2. Pomona College
Also located in Claremont, it has about 1,600 undergraduates and is one of the top 10 liberal arts colleges in the country. It is a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences. Pomona College has an 8:1 student/faculty ratio and its average class size is 14.
3. Santa Clara University
Located in the Northern Californian city of Santa Clara, Santa Clara University is a private Catholic university with about 5,200 undergraduates. It is known as one of the top Catholic universities in the nation, and sits on an attractive 106 acres. Santa Clara University has strong community service programs, high alumni salaries, and has a very strong undergraduate business school. It is also a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences.
4. Scripps College
Another college located in Claremont, Scripps College has less that 1,000 undergraduates. It is one of the top women’s colleges in the country and is a highly ranked liberal arts college. Scripps is known for its attractive Spanish architecture, has a 9:1 student/faculty ratio, and its core curriculum focuses on interdisciplinary humanities. Scripps is also a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa due to its strong liberal arts and sciences.
5. Soka University of America
With an enrollment of just over 400 undergraduates, Soka University of America is located in Aliso Viejo, California, on an attractive mountainside campus above Laguna Beach. Soka is a private college grounded in Buddhist principles of peace and human rights. It has a student/faculty ratio of 9:1 with an average class size of 13. Soka has an international student body.
6. Stanford University
Located in Palo Alto in Northern California, Stanford is a private university with about 7,000 undergraduates. It is known as one of the top universities in the entire country. Stanford is a member in the Association of American Universities for excellent research programs. Being one of the most selective colleges in the country, Stanford is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa for its strong liberal arts and sciences.
7. Thomas Aquinas College
As a private Catholic liberal arts college in Santa Paula, California, Thomas Aquinas only has about 350 undergraduates. It is known for its great books curriculum and has no textbooks. It also ranks highly among top conservative colleges and is located on an attractive 131-acre campus. None of the classes have a lecture format, and the curriculum features sustained tutorials, seminars, and laboratories.
