The Importance of Reading for the College-Bound Student

The Importance of Reading for the College-Bound Student

One of the biggest adjustments high school students face when they head off to college is the amount of reading they encounter in the college courses they are taking. Having excellent reading skills as a college-bound student will be enormously beneficial once you begin your college journey.

Most people know that reading can make you more knowledgeable, can be great entertainment, and can be done almost anywhere, but there are some other great benefits from being an avid reader.

Academically, reading increases your vocabulary. Reading exposes you to more words, which eventually become a part of your everyday vocabulary. This leads to you being more articulate, which has been proven to boost your self-esteem.

Reading also gives you stronger analytical thinking skills, which will definitely help you throughout your college career and life.

In addition, exposing yourself to published, well-written works will actually make you a better writer. Through reading, you observe cadence, fluidity, and the vast writing styles of authors that will positively influence your own writing.

Reading has also shown to improve your memory. Take your favorite novel, for example. As you are reading, you are remembering all of the characters, their backgrounds and histories, as well as all of the plots and sub-plots that present themselves throughout the book. By transferring this skill to the college material you have to read, you will be better equipped to handle the abundance of reading you are going to face.

Another benefit to reading is that it can improve your focus and concentration. Studies show that reading just 15-20 minutes in the morning will allow you to be more focused throughout the day.  And, in the social-media world that we live in today where your attention is drawn in many different directions, being able to concentrate and focus can be very beneficial.

As a future college student, you are undoubtedly going to have stress. One great way to deal with the stress is to simply read. When you read for pleasure, you lose yourself into a great story, transport yourself to another world, and become part of the author’s story. And, for that time being, your stress drains away.

Everyone knows that reading is great for you, but in today’s society, it seems to be more of a chore than a pleasure. By becoming an excellent reader, the benefits will allow you be a better college student.
