The Importance of the Scholarship Essay
Although our focus at Advanced College Solutions is not necessarily on scholarships, we understand that with rising costs of college, most students will apply for scholarships to offset the cost of a college education.
One of the most important aspects of applying for a scholarship is writing an excellent essay. The essay is your best chance to make the case why you should receive the scholarship. And, by writing an impressive essay, your scholarship application can stand out above the rest.
Here are a few tips to follow in writing the scholarship essay:
It’s important to remember that every scholarship provider is looking for a specific student who meets its unique criteria. Make sure you understand what each provider is looking for. Are they focusing on your grades? Are they centering on a student who has overcome adversity? Is having integrity and doing community service more important than your GPA? Analyze the questions they are asking carefully and write to the specific audience.
A good start is to organize an outline, which will allow you to stay concise and on target. Create two or three main points you want to make in response to the essay question you are answering. Under each main point, craft supporting information to sell your main points.
- Focus on Being Personal and Passionate
When you write your essay for the scholarship application, remember that your main objective it to convince the scholarship provider that you are without a doubt the student who deserves this money they are offering. For each of your main points, “show” that you are passionate about the subject. Include your unique interests and perspectives and explain why you enjoy working at a homeless shelter or volunteering with disadvantage children.
- Proofread, Proofread, and Proofread Again
Before you submit your scholarship essay, make sure you have not only proofread it numerous times, but have others read it as well. Ask your parents, your English teacher, or a friend who is taking AP or Honors English. In addition, read your essay out loud to yourself and an audience see if it “flows” the way you intend it to.
