Preparing Yourself for College
With the competitive nature of getting into college, it is always helpful to know exactly what you, as a high school student, need to focus on in order to make yourself the most marketable.
Here is a list to keep in mind as you continue to excel in high school and get ready to tackle college.
- Engage in a challenging high school curriculum
Your transcript should reflect a challenging and rigorous curriculum that could put you a step in front of other applicants.
- Shoot for solid scores on the standardized tests
Remember that your scores on the ACT and SAT do carry considerable weight in the college admissions process. Almost every student can benefit from a specialized study program, such as one we offer at Advanced College Solutions, Inc.
- Have “quality” involvement in activities
When you are involved in an activity, make sure it is something you are passionate about. And, as you continue to be involved, demonstrate leadership and initiative in the activity. Remember, depth, not breadth is most important.
When you decide to do your community service, try to do something that demonstrates your concern for other people and/or something that has a “global view.”
- Special awards and attributes
You have accomplished a plethora of positive things throughout your high school career, so make sure you show it. List all of your honors, awards, any evidence of an unusual talent or experience, and anything that makes you “stand out” or makes you “unique.”
- Work, internships and/or out of school experience
Having a job or an internship throughout high school will show that you exhibit responsibility, dedication, and personal development.
The essay you provide for the college admissions should be insightful and well-written. Again, at Advanced College Solutions, Inc., we offer programs that can help you write a powerful essay.
- Letters of recommendation
You may need one or two letters of recommendation from a teacher, coach, or counselor that knows you well. Just remember to give this individual plenty of notice so that they can write a recommendation that will truly express who you are.
